If you are considering adopting a child, you may have questions about whether you should adopt through an agency or do so independently. Here’s an overview of each so that you can make an informed and confident decision that works for you and your family.
Agency Adoptions
If you want someone with you who can guide you step-by-step through the adoption process, then going with an adoption agency may be the right choice for you. Agencies provide a social worker who will perform a home study and handle the termination of parental rights. Since custody of the child is relinquished to the agency from the birth parents, an attorney will be needed to prepare the final decree of adoption.
Independent Adoptions
Independent, or private, adoptions provide parents with more freedom and control over whom they adopt from, what type of expenses and how much they wish to pay, and what type of relationship they want with the birth mother. However, it is also far less private than working with an agency. An attorney will play a much greater role in an independent adoption, who will be in charge of obtaining the birth parents’ consent for the adoption and terminating parental rights. They may also screen potential birth mothers for families, help make logistical decisions at the hospital during delivery, and prepare written agreements for future contact.
