On April 22, 2014, The Law Office of Janet McCullar, P.C. was a platinum sponsor for the Travis County Women Lawyers Association / Travis County Women Lawyers Foundation Annual Attorney Awards and Grants Luncheon. The Awards & Grants luncheon is an event with a two-fold purpose: to honor leading women lawyers in Travis County and to distribute grants to local nonprofits that help solve legal issues affecting women, children, and families. This is an event that is near and dear to the lawyers in our firm. Why? Because, at this moment, our firm is an all-female office practicing right here in the spectacular Travis County.
More importantly, it is a time when amazing women in our community are recognized for their selfless work in the legal field. One of our favorite people, Barbara Ellis, was recognized for her commitment to pro bono work since 1995. Barbara is not only a friend to us, but also an extraordinary example to all female lawyers. Also noteworthy is another friend, Amie Rodnick, who was recognized for her advancement of women’s interests. For years, we have worked alongside Amie in the family law arena as a colleague and mediator with incredible creativity for helping families reach resolution without court intervention.
This year’s guest speaker, Major Mary Jennings Hegar, shared her experience as a military pilot and woman in combat. She delivered a passionate message about the inequalities of women who are dismissed for combat missions. Major Hegar was adamant that she not be referred to as a “hero”, but truly, her unintended involvement in combat, which nearly ended her life, can only be described as heroic. She thanked the room full of female lawyers and reminded us that, without our expertise and shared passion for women’s rights, she would never have a voice.
We left this event feeling inspired and empowered. It is always one of our favorite luncheons to attend.
